Ensure your 2018 workout wardrobe works for you by investing in the fabrics, fits and functional fashion-inspired essentials to get your from go to woah!
Do you remember those long ago days when sloppy joes, tracksuit pants, leggings and crop tops were basically reserved for the couch? Not anymore. Athleisure has taken the world by storm. No sweat required. But the key to really nailing the comfort and street-cred factor is to shop the workout fabrics that work for you.
Here are the best fabrics – and pieces – to build a truly wonderful workout wardrobe!
When it comes to those wear-anywhere pieces (from coffee to crunch class, school drop-off to spin session) loose cotton styles are the best option. A recent European study revealed that cotton is the least ‘on-the-nose’ fabric and – unlike synthetic fabrics – it doesn’t harbour bacteria that leads to icky smells. However, although cotton doesn’t allow odour to take hold as much as some other fabrics, it does absorb moisture so it’s best to shed your cotton skin after a workout.
Tip: If you’re after something with a little more shape and form, like crop tops, singlets or leggings, cotton-blends are a great option too.
Nike Training Loose Breathe Tank In Black, $64, available at ASOS.
Cotton Citizen Tokyo Crop Tee, $90, available at Bandier.
Cotton Citizen Milan Jogger, $225, available at Bandier.
When it comes to a workout, you want fabrics that can really take a hit when they need to. Nylon is a great option as it dries quickly and nixes sweat on contact as well as being able to stretch with you. Fancy some spandex? You just might when you get a feel for how darn durable this is! Also known as the brand name Lycra, this synthetic fabric snaps back into shape after being expanded to nearly 600% of its size.
Tip: Do go down the spandex path for pieces that go several rounds!
Puma Exclusive To ASOS Active Long Sleeve Mesh Top & Legging In Lilac, $140, available at ASOS.
Pop Active by Poprageous Leopard Print Crop Top, $78; Pop Active by Poprageous Leopard Print Capri Gym Legging, $125, available at ASOS.
Get out and into training all year round with weatherproof layers to throw on when on the go! Look for polyester which is not waterproof, but it is water resistant so it acts as a perfect barrier when outdoors in mild weather. Anything offering a synthetic membrane is a bonus if you’re in the elements too!
Tip: Look for additional quilting or thermal lining if you’re after more warmth too!

Ok, so you feel great, but do you look the goods? Athleisure wear that works on the street, and on the catwalk, is possible! There are so many fitness accessories that blur the lines between fashion and function, it’s not funny! So don’t feel guilty about investing in big-ticket brand items to wear to the gym. Think of it as an investment in your health, right?
