There are several reasons how smoothies save you. For one, they save time! Blending up beauty foods in seconds? Yes, please. Furthermore, they save your health. By drinking your fruit, veggies and supplements in one hit, you’re doing good for your body too.

However, the best part for me is that smoothies save my sanity. There’s not a more appealing option for a breakneck speed breakfast, low-maintenance lunch and a dinner even the biggest culinary dummy could manage (ie; me!)

Melbourne-based nutritionist Bannie Williams is the brains behind The Healthy Ingredient and her new book, The Smoothie Manifesto, a must-have book packed with smoothies for every time of the day, and any dietary requirement. I sat down with her to talk life-saving smoothies!

Why smoothies?

The beauty of smoothies is that you can pack them with as many ingredients and nutrients as you like. If you are short of time, they can be a super efficient way to ensure you are getting your daily dose of fruit, vegetables and dietary fibre. Smoothies are also a great way to incorporate nutrient enhancers (or superfoods) including spirulina, acai or maca, into the diet which you may not consume in any other form.

Is there any danger in supplementing meals with smoothies?

There aren’t any dangers in supplementing meals with smoothies, provided they are nutrient dense and part of a balanced diet. I often recommend smoothies as a breakfast option and have been known to have them for dinner/dessert myself!

Your book outlines smoothies for different times of the day. Can you tell us why?

In the book, I categorised the smoothies in order to maximise their nutritional benefits throughout different times of the day. The Rise and Shine chapter is focused on nourishing breakfast recipes to help kick-start the metabolism, Every Day Elixirs focuses on delicious smoothies for snacks, or as a filling pick me up and Sweet Treats are for when you need to indulge a little. However, these chapters are simply a guide and there are no strict rules when it comes to smoothies!

What are the best blenders?

I recommend investing in a quality blender if you are keen to embrace the smoothie life. Not only will it help blend the ingredients to a beautiful and smooth consistency, it will encourage you to get use out of it. There are some great products on the market now which aren’t too expensive, I am really enjoying using the Breville Boss To Go at the moment.

Here are the shakes that keep me sane!
