Your DIY Detox in 9 Simple Steps

Detoxes are designed to minimise the madness in our daily diet, but sometimes they become more confusing than clarifying.

If you want to make some healthy changes to your daily life, here is a healthy DIY detox you can implement daily.

1. Say Goodbye to Booze

Straight out of the gates, that evening Reisling is not doing you any favours.  Alcohol is packed with calories, and it also puts tremendous stress on the liver – which also has the job of metabolising fat and toxins. Pull back on the plonk for at least the month of March so your body can work more efficiently and you can live more vitally.

2. Say Hello to Water

A squeeze of lemon juice in warm water each morning is a perfect way to boost the metabolism before you take a bite of breakfast. But your water consumption shouldn’t end there. Continue drinking room temperature water throughout the day, to maintain hydration and to ward off unnecessary snacking.

3. Say Goodbye to Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates may look delicious (hello croissant!) but once you’ve gobbled them up, they are broken down into sugar and stored as fat. If you do exercise regularly, you can earn yourself good carbohydrates (brown rice and grains) to fuel your inner fitness fire, but if you live a sedentary life, you are not burning up all that stored sugar. At the very least cut carbohydrate out after midday so you’re still working some of them off before bedtime.

4. Say Hello to Vegetables

Plan out your five serves per day starting with some tomato on your eggs in the morning, some carrot sticks for snacks and rounding it out with a salad at dinner. The enzymes in raw veggies are fabulous for encouraging the breakdown of food and gut function. Farewell sluggish feeling!

5. Say Goodbye To Bad Skin

If your skin is problematic, the culprit is likely to be on your plate. The skin is a major elimination organ so when it has to expel toxins from fried and processed foods, the result is acne, eczema and a raft of other skin conditions.

6. Say Hello to the Knife

The easiest way to avoid reaching for a bag of lollies or chips at snack time is to keep small portions of healthy food close by. Cut up celery and carrots at the start of the week and store in the fridge for daily health hits. Roma tomatoes are also a delicious snack to reach for in seconds.

7. Say Goodbye to Office Snacks

Don’t let all your hard-earned wellness come undone as soon as you hit the office. Swap coffee breaks for herbal tea hits and bring your carrots in replacement of reaching for the cookie jar. Take a healthy yoghurt for afternoon slumps and leave your small change at home, so you’re not tempted to trawl the vending machine!

8. Say Hello to Smaller Portions

Women don’t need as many kilojoules as men, so don’t try and keep up with the boys at the dinner table. Keep portions to a fist size and eat more little meals, more often to keep the metabolism stoked.

9. Say Goodbye to Sleep Ins

Get up half an hour earlier in the morning. A brisk run or walk around the block will do the trick if you’re in a rush or get to a gym class before the day kicks in. If you’re housebound, set up your pilates DVD the night before, so you’re ready to step into your ‘home’ studio by 6 am! Exercise is proven to make you feel more alert, reduce depression and aggressiveness. Every bit counts!
